Partnership Vital in EHR Decisions: Insights from the Acute Care EHR Market Share 2025 Report

The latest acute care EHR market share trends show that vendor partnership matters more than ever in this advancing market.

Healthcare organizations are continually evaluating their technology investments to ensure they are best meeting organizational needs. When deciding on their investments, organizations often seek partners who can offer comprehensive solutions, provide key support, and implement requested changes based on customer feedback. As technology advances, a key differentiator between vendors who will gain or lose market share will likely be the strength of the vendor’s partnership. The US Acute Care EHR Market Share 2025 report dives deep into this dynamic, which shapes the report’s comprehensive analysis of the trends and shifts that happened in this market in 2024.

Overall Market Trends in 2024

Purchase energy among acute care organizations remained high in 2024, with a total of 272 hospitals impacted by purchase decisions—down slightly from 319 in 2023. Health systems continued to drive most of the decisions made in 2024. Large health systems often made decisions based on the desire to create standardization and enhance care coordination, while small health systems prioritized competitive solutions and integration goals. Standalone hospitals, particularly those with fewer than 200 beds, focused on budget-conscious solutions, and specialty hospitals often opted for tailored EHR offerings to meet their specific needs.

The Power of Partnerships in Driving Market Share

As said, one of the standout findings of the report is the critical role of partnerships in EHR purchase decisions. Vendors that excel in listening to customers, taking feedback, and implementing requested changes are more likely to see gains in market share. Check out some of the high-level insights on the vendors with the current top-three market share.

Epic

For several years, Epic has gained the most market share in the acute care space, notably being the only vendor chosen by large health systems making go-forward decisions for their enterprise. In 2024, Epic had their largest net gain of hospitals on record with the addition of 176 hospitals. Their market share can largely be attributed to the vendor’s strong partnerships with health systems and organizations, as those organizations often seek vendors with a strong reputation for driving customer satisfaction and providing stable, interoperable products. Among health systems who have considered Epic but not made the move, the cost of switching platforms is often cited as the main barrier.

Oracle Health

Over the years, customer satisfaction with Oracle Health has continued to decrease, especially since the Cerner acquisition, and along with that, many hospitals have moved away from the vendor. That trend continued in 2024. Now, however, Oracle Health sits at a critical turning point, where customers are expressing cautious optimism because of recent technology developments or announcements (such as the Clinical AI Agent tool). But as the vendor delivers on these advancements, Oracle Health will also need to strengthen their vendor partnership in order to maintain current customers and win new hospitals in the future.

MEDITECH

MEDITECH has retained a high percentage of legacy customers who have migrated to their go-forward Expanse platform, doubling their retention rate of those making go-forward decisions in 2024 versus 2023. MEDITECH’s ability to foster strong partnerships with their clients and the enhanced technology with MEDITECH as a Service (MaaS) are often noted as key to the vendor’s sustained presence among these legacy customers. Still, overall, MEDITECH had a negative net change in their market share, largely due to the loss of one large health system.
