During the last quarter, the Arch Collaborative has published 8 case studies highlighting the success of several high-performing organizations.

Healthcare organizations all over the world are transforming their EHR experience for clinicians. Using insights from the KLAS Arch Collaborative, they are reducing burnout, improving workflows, and empowering clinicians. In our case studies, we spotlight real-world examples of how high-performing health systems are turning data into action and driving measurable improvements in clinician satisfaction and burnout.

These case studies showcase what’s possible when organizations commit to listening, learning, and leading change. 

April Case Studies 

1. Reducing Burnout and Improving EHR Satisfaction at Legacy Health 

Legacy Health implemented Microsoft’s DAX Copilot for a myriad of reasons. They wanted to help reduce provider burnout, decrease the cognitive burden, and help their clinicians find joy in medicine again. Those that participated in the pilot saw a 17-percentage point reduction in burnout, among many other outcomes. Because of the pilot program’s success, DAX Copilot was expanded for broader rollout by October 2024.

2. Leveraging a Multidisciplinary Team to Optimize Nursing Documentation at Wooster Community Hospital Health System 

When Wooster Community Hospital Health System got their first Arch Collaborative survey results, they learned that their nurses were overwhelmed by the burden of documentation. So, they made it a priority to reduce it. They created the Freeing up Nurses’ Time Initiative (F.U.N.-Time Initiative) and used a multidisciplinary team to bring the plan to life. Overall, the organization saw a 20.9-point improvement in their nurses’ Net EHR Experience Score (NEES).

May Case Studies 

1. Empowering Nurses at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) 

To boost nurse engagement and help with clear communication around EHR updates, CHOP created a nursing-informatics governance council along with a structured communication system. As a result, CHOP is now in the 94th percentile for nurse agreement that EHR changes are well communicated.

2. Empowering Nurse Voices and Redesigning EHR Workflows at Mercy Health 

Mercy Health launched their new initiative, Project Advancing Nursing Efficiencies and Workflows (ANEW), to improve nurse efficiency and reduce their documentation burden. Through their efforts, this large health system then saw an 8.1-point improvement in their nurses’ NEES.

3. Enhancing Care at CHOP 

This case study outlines CHOP’s strategy for EHR improvement, including fostering shared ownership and ensuring that frontline nurses are central to the evolution of their healthcare technology. CHOP is now in the 96th percentile for nurse agreement that the EHR enables quality care.

June Case Studies 

1. Leveraging Governance and EHR Education at Atlantic Health System 

Facing rising physician burnout, Atlantic Health System introduced a wellness informatics program to improve physician satisfaction and inefficient workflows. Their strategy used both efficiency education and technology change. Today, 73% of their physicians agree that they are experiencing no symptoms of burnout.

2. Provider Training Success at Carle Health   

Carle Health’s initial training for providers uses two separate programs unified by structured processes. In this case study, you’ll learn about those programs, which include in-person and virtual training, mentorship, and follow-up support. The unified programs led to several organizational outcomes, including being in the 100th percentile for provider agreement that tip sheets and online training were effective.

3. Strong Support Through a Close-Knit Informatics Team at Olmstead Medical Center 

Olmstead Medical Center is recognized by their clinicians for providing timely EHR fixes, clarity on how to request EHR changes, and strong communication about changes to end users. This is all thanks to a tightly coordinated informatics team. The organization is in the 90th percentile for respondent satisfaction with the ability to request EHR fixes.
