In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, organizations need clear, data-rich insights to inform their decisions and help them navigate changes. However, with the increasing digitalization of health information, organizations have an unprecedented amount of data to access and can struggle to synthesize this information on their own. Further, with all the emerging AI capabilities, healthcare organizations need to ensure they have a good data foundation before they begin exploring new technologies.
Enter data and analytics platforms—software that ingests and analyzes clinical, operational, and financial data to provide enterprise analytics and reporting that executives and other non-IT users can understand. With the increasing amount of available data, healthcare organizations rely on these platforms for actionable insights that can improve their operational efficiency, financial performance, and patient health outcomes. KLAS’ recently published Data & Analytics Platforms 2025 report provides an update on vendor performance in this segment—in particular, the key elements that lead to customer success and the barriers that hinder outcomes. This article summaries and expands on some of the insights shared in that report.
Data & Analytics Platforms & AI
The overlap between analytics and AI is increasing. Historically, data and analytics platforms have mostly provided retrospective algorithms and data visualizations, but healthcare organizations increasingly expect their data and analytics vendors to also provide strong advanced capabilities—e.g., machine learning, automated model building, geospatial analytics, predictive analytics, and other AI capabilities. As AI continues to develop, data and analytics vendors will have ample opportunities to incorporate AI into their platforms, as the methods for synthesizing and displaying data will continue to evolve and become more customized to user preferences.
Additionally, AI has the potential to help remove barriers (see chart above) that prevent organizations from achieving outcomes with their data and analytics platforms. However, there are barriers that AI won’t be able to erase, such as internal alignment or expertise. In this regard, the human element is irreplaceable, and much of that human support needs to come from vendors.
The Importance of Vendor Support
While advanced capabilities are an important factor in healthcare organizations’ ability to achieve success with data and analytics platforms, having advanced capabilities does not matter unless customers also have vendor support in operationalizing platform-provided insights. Data in the recent report shows that high customer satisfaction depends less on the number of advanced capabilities being used and more and the quality of vendor support. Healthcare organizations face significant staffing and financial constraints and have to juggle competing priorities, often preventing them from having the time or ability to understand the output from data and analytics platforms. Vendor support and guidance is essential to customers’ ability to achieve long-term success with these platforms.
The Future of Data & Analytics
Data and analytics platforms will continue to be top of mind for healthcare organizations, as the amount of data they have will continue to grow and AI will help refine the analytics capabilities. KLAS plans to continually monitor how these technologies evolve and examine how we classify and measure them.
Looking ahead, this space will see more consolidation. Currently, many organizations use multiple data and analytics platforms in order to fulfill all their needs. As EHR vendors further develop their capabilities to bring in and synthesize data, organizations will likely consolidate to their EHR vendor’s offering.
